What Is the Delta Companion Pass?
The Delta Companion pass, or more accurately, the Delta Companion Certificate is Delta’s take on a two-for-one flight deal. You buy a cash ticket, and your companion gets to fly almost free—just taxes and fees. It works a lot like the Southwest Companion Pass or Alaska’s Companion Fare, though Delta calls theirs a certificate instead. Same idea, just with a few more rules (because… Delta).
How Do You Get a Delta Companion Certificate?
You can obtain a Delta Companion Certificate by holding one of four American Express-branded Delta credit cards. Here’s a look at the cards that can score you the Companion Certificate:
🛎️ Important Clarification: The certificate is issued after your first card anniversary—not in your first year.

How to Use the Delta Companion Certificate (Step-by-Step)
⌚ Time Saving Tip: Don’t be like me and search for your flight then try to figure out which cabin code is eligible and how to apply your Companion Certificate. Find the Certificate first, then it will guide you to eligible flights.
✈️ Step 1: Locate Your Certificate
Go to My Profile > Certificates, eCredits & Vouchers or use the “Look Up” option with your SkyMiles number or certificate code.

✈️ Step 2: Select & Redeem
Find your active Companion Certificate, click Continue > Redeem Now, and Delta will redirect you to a special booking page.
✈️ Step 3: Search and Book
Use the search tool to find eligible roundtrip flights for two passengers. The Companion Certificate will auto-apply, and you’ll see the taxes and fees before checkout.
🌀 Tip: You don’t need to enter your companion’s info right away. Once you select your flights, Delta will prompt you to add your companion’s details before completing the booking.
Review Your Companion Certificate Details
Even after you’ve used the certificate to book a flight, you can still view key info in your Delta account—like the deadline to fly by, eligible fare classes, and which destinations qualify. It’s a quick way to double-check that your booking stays within the rules.

Where Can You Use the Delta Companion Pass? (Hawaii, Expanded Destinations & More Explained)
This is the list of eligible locations you can use your Delta Companion Certificate to fly to. Yes, this does mean you can use it to fly to Hawaii or Alaska.

| Region | Eligible Destinations |
|---|---|
| U.S. & Territories | United States U.S. Virgin Islands Puerto Rico |
| Mexico, Caribbean & Central America | Mexico Aruba Antigua Bermuda Bonaire Grand Cayman Cuba (subject to compliance by law) Jamaica Bahamas Turks and Caicos Dominican Republic Saint Kitts St. Maarten St. Lucia Costa Rica Belize Guatemala Panama Honduras El Salvador |
Tip: Airports that are near each other can often be used separately for your roundtrip booking. For example, when we fly to Chicago using the certificate, we sometimes fly into ORD and out of MDW (or vice versa), and Delta still counts it as a valid roundtrip.
Similarities & Differences of Delta Companion Certificates
Not all Delta Companion Certificates work the same. Use the tables below to quickly compare the similarities and key differences between the Delta Amex Platinum and Reserve cards—both personal and business.

What If You Need to Cancel or Change Your Flight?
Here’s what you need to know:
- Travel must be booked and completed before your certificate’s expiration date
- Changes and cancellations are allowed, per Delta’s fare rules
- You don’t need to cancel to change—you can modify it directly
- Any fare difference will apply to the paid ticket, not the companion’s
🌅 I thought the process was easy and user-friendly. I could see price differences, confirmation the companion certificate was applied, and confirmation pages before any final changes.
If you’re wondering what protections actually apply during cancellations or delays, here’s how credit card travel insurance works.
Real Life Example:
My husband booked a Delta Companion flight for him and our daughter. When Delta changed the flight time, it was easy to switch to a later option. It was also clear which flights would cause a change in price of the paid ticket.

No Price Change
Can You Pay for the Main Ticket with SkyMiles?
Nope. The main ticket must be paid for in cash using your Delta SkyMiles credit card.
SkyMiles, Pay with Miles, or other travel credits won’t qualify, but you may apply eCredits.
What If You’re Traveling with More Than Two People?
The Delta Companion Certificate only covers two people per booking—the paid traveler and the companion.
If you have more travelers, you’ll need to book separately and call Delta to link the reservations. This doesn’t combine the bookings but lets Delta agents see you’re traveling together. Sometimes, they’ll even help seat you together, especially if one traveler has Medallion status—but that’s never guaranteed.
Is the Delta Companion Certificate Worth It? Or Just… Worthless?
Wondering if the Delta Companion Certificate is worth it—or if it’s one of those benefits that sounds great until you actually try to use it? Here’s a quick breakdown of when it delivers real value, and when it might leave you frustrated.
🛣 When the Delta Companion Certificate Is Worth It
- You fly once or twice a year with a partner, child, or friend
- You’re planning a trip of at least 3 nights to an eligible destination
- You’re flexible with dates and can plan ahead
- You value Delta Medallion upgrade opportunities—your Companion Certificate booking is eligible for complimentary upgrades (when available)
🚧 When the Delta Companion Certificate Feels Worthless
- You can’t find eligible flights or your preferred dates are always sold out
- You typically fly solo or use points, not cash
- You forget to use the certificate before it expires (it happens!)
- You book last-minute trips or only travel during high-demand periods with blackout restrictions
- You usually fly in a group, and don’t want to deal with separate bookings or calling Delta to link reservations
Common Mistakes When Using the Delta Companion Certificate
Even experienced travelers miss some of the fine print. Here’s what trips people up most often:
- Trying to book one-way flights. The certificate only works for roundtrip tickets.
- Forgetting the 3-night minimum. Trips shorter than three nights aren’t eligible.
- Booking Basic Economy. Not valid. You’ll need Main Cabin or higher.
- Paying with the wrong card. You must use the same Delta Amex that issued your certificate.
- Assuming you can upgrade later. Reserve cardholders can book Comfort+, Premium Select, or First Class at purchase, but you can’t “upgrade” the fare afterward with miles or cash.
- Letting it expire. You must book and complete travel before the expiration date.
From Experience: What I Learned the Hard Way
I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Delta Companion Certificate—mostly because I didn’t fully understand the rules when I first got the card.
For starters, I didn’t realize the certificate isn’t issued until your second year. That’s on me—it’s clearly in the terms, but I skimmed and made assumptions. Thankfully, the welcome bonus points and other card benefits still made it worth keeping, but it was a good reminder that doing your research up front really matters.
We thought we would use the certificate easily since we travel a few times a year. Between weddings and a race weekend, I figured it would fit somewhere. But every trip ended up being too short or didn’t line up with Delta’s routes.
We first tried applying our Delta Platinum Companion Certificate for a trip to Chicago (that included one stop). There were three of us: my husband, our daughter, and me. We paid for his ticket using our card, used the certificate for our daughter, and I booked mine separately with SkyMiles. It wasn’t perfect, but I didn’t want it to go to waste.
Then I noticed United had a direct flight that was cheaper for all three of us than the Delta option, even with the Companion Certificate. So I canceled our Delta booking and let the certificate expire. I just couldn’t justify paying more and being more inconvenienced to use it.
I was so focused on getting the most out of it that I forgot sometimes the easier option is the better one.
Looking back, I should have used it on a less expensive flight. Holding out for the best deal meant I didn’t save anything at all.
I still think the Companion Certificate is worth having, but I see it differently now. In the end, it taught me that value isn’t always about getting the biggest savings, but actually getting to use what you have.
Delta Companion Certificate FAQs (2025 Edition)
Can I use the Companion Certificate for one-way flights?
No—Delta requires roundtrip bookings. But you can use different nearby airports for departure and return. For example, flying into ORD and out of MDW still counts as roundtrip.
Does the Delta Companion Certificate cover Basic Economy?
Nope. All four eligible cards only allow redemption on Main Cabin or higher. Basic Economy fares don’t qualify.
When is the Delta Companion Certificate issued each year?
It’s issued after your cardmember anniversary (not when you open the card). You’ll get an email and can also find it in your Delta profile under “Certificates, eCredits, and Vouchers.”
What happens if I cancel a flight booked with a Companion Certificate?
If you cancel, the certificate is usually reissued to your Delta account—but you’ll need to rebook and fly before the original expiration date. Always double-check the terms before canceling.
🧳 Packing It Up: Knowing the Rules Makes All the Difference
The Delta Companion Certificate can be a great deal—but only if your travel style fits within its rules. That means really taking the time to understand those details upfront.
I’ll admit, my biggest hiccups came from assumptions and not digging into the fine print. That made it harder to use for the kinds of trips my family takes. But once we figured out the sweet spots—what trips work best and how to plan ahead—it started to make a lot more sense.
My husband flies Delta for work often and we’re keeping our Platinum card. Honestly, we’re even thinking about upgrading to the Reserve next year. When you factor in the other card benefits alongside making smart use of the companion certificate, the overall value can easily outweigh the annual fee.
Bottom line: if you’re willing to put in a little effort to learn the rules and use all the benefits, the Companion Certificate can really pay off.
