Stack Smart: No-Fee Cards + Portals = Transferable Travel Points

Looking to earn travel rewards without paying annual fees? This guide shows you the best no annual fee credit cards for earning travel points and how to stack them with portals for even more rewards. These are the flexible rewards you can move to airlines and hotels for real trips.

If you’re new to travel rewards, start with our complete Points & Miles Guide which explains how the entire system works. You can also read How Transferable Points Work for a quick foundation.

Why This Strategy Works

Most cards earn only 1 or 2 points per dollar on regular purchases. When you add a shopping portal on top of your card, you can earn ten to twenty times more on the same purchase you planned to make.

And because you’re earning transferable points, you aren’t locked into one airline or hotel. You get flexibility without paying annual fees.

Portals That Earn Transferable Points

There are only a few portals that earn transferable points, which makes this strategy easy to follow.

Rakuten To Amex Membership Rewards

Rakuten is the only third-party portal that deposits your rewards as Amex Membership Rewards instead of cash back.

Conversion rate
1 percent cash back equals 1 Membership Rewards point
(Rakuten shows this as: 1 dollar cash back equals 100 Membership Rewards Points)

How to link Amex to Rakuten
You link your Amex account inside Rakuten, not the other way around.
• Log into Rakuten
• Go to Account Settings
• Open “How You’re Getting Paid”
• Choose “American Express Membership Rewards”
• Sign into your Amex account to link it

What to know
• You can pay with any card
• Membership Rewards points transfer only once every quarter
• You’ll still see pending earnings inside Rakuten before the transfer happens
• The Rakuten Chrome extension helps catch offers you’d otherwise miss

Rakuten To Bilt Points

(You can earn Bilt Points here even if you don’t have the Bilt Mastercard.)

Rakuten can also send your rewards to Bilt, which is great if you want partners like Hyatt, United or Alaska Airlines.

Conversion rate
1 percent cash back equals 1 Bilt Point
(Rakuten displays this as: 1 dollar cash back equals 100 Bilt Points)

How to link Rakuten to Bilt
You don’t link Amex here. Instead, you link Rakuten to Bilt inside the Bilt app.
• Open the Bilt app
• Tap Rewards
• Tap Everyday Rewards
• Choose Rakuten
• Link accounts (emails must match)

What to know
• Rakuten still only transfers points once every quarter
• You can pay with any card
• It’s one of the easiest ways to earn Bilt Points without the Bilt card

This option is great if you prefer Hyatt, United or Alaska Airlines, or if you don’t hold an Amex Membership Rewards card. It’s also one of the simplest ways to earn transferable points without opening new cards.

Capital One Offers For You

Inside your Capital One account, you will see a section called Offers For You. When you activate an offer and click through, certain rewards cards (which we’ll discuss below) earn extra Capital One Miles instead of cash back.

How it works
• Sign in to your Capital One account
• Open the Offers For You section
• Click on a merchant
• Shop through the link
• Pay with any card you like

Capital One Miles transfer to partners such as Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Air France and more.

Earn Hubs That Earn Transferable Points (Not Portals)

Bilt Rewards

Bilt is not a shopping portal. It is a rewards ecosystem that lets you earn transferable Bilt Points through linked cards, partner restaurants, fitness studios, Walgreens partners and monthly bonuses. You can also earn Bilt Points through Rakuten if you set your payouts to Bilt.

Bilt Points transfer to valuable partners such as Hyatt, United, Alaska Airlines, Flying Blue and more.

How To Earn Bilt Points Without The Bilt Card

Inside the free Bilt Rewards app, you can link any credit or debit card. After linking a card to your Bilt Wallet, you can earn Bilt Points on top of your card’s normal rewards when you shop at participating partners.

Ways to earn without the Bilt card
• Neighborhood Dining partners
• Fitness studio partners like SoulCycle, Rumble and Y7
• Walgreens partners
• Rakuten payouts set to Bilt Points
• Rent Day promotions and monthly challenges inside the app

These methods allow you to build Bilt Points even if you never apply for the Bilt Mastercard.

What The Bilt Mastercard Adds

(Currently no annual fee. Bilt will release additional cards, including annual fee options, in 2026.)

The Bilt Mastercard is optional, but it increases your earning potential and helps renters earn rewards without fees.

Card perks
• 3 points per dollar on dining
• 2 points per dollar on travel
• 1 point per dollar on general purchases
• 1 point per dollar on rent payments with no transaction fee
• 6 points per dollar on dining on the first day of each month
• Bilt travel protections and seasonal card-linked bonuses

Portal Rules That Protect Your Points

Portal Tips For Reliable Tracking
• Turn off ad blockers
• Avoid coupon code pop-ups
• Don’t use multiple extensions at the same time
• Stay in the same browser tab after clicking through
• Don’t pay with gift cards
• Scan Terms & Conditions to ensure your item is not excluded (purchasing gift cards, groceries, etc. are often excluded)

No Annual Fee Card + Portal Pairings

These combinations show where each no-annual-fee card shines when paired with the right portal. If you want more ideas for turning points into trips, here’s my beginner guide on How to Use Credit Card Points for Travel: A Beginner’s Guide to Flexible Rewards.

Capital One VentureOne + Capital One Exclusive Offers

Both versions of the VentureOne are no-fee cards that earn 1.25 Capital One Miles per dollar. The only difference is approval requirements.

Why this pairing works
• Click a Capital One offer
• Shop through the link
• Earn bonus miles from the portal
• Earn 1.25 miles per dollar from the card
• Points transfer to airline and hotel partners

Quick example
A 100 dollar purchase with a 12X Capital One offer earns 1,200 miles from the portal plus 125 miles from the card.

🛑 Important: This is not the same as the Capital One Shopping browser extension, which earns cashback that can only be redeemed for gift cards.
✅ We’re talking here about transferable Capital One miles — the kind that can be moved to airline and hotel partners for travel.

Here’s what these Capital One Offers look like in your dashboard:

A screenshot of some of the exclusive Offers Capital one offers including up to 5X at Samsung and up to 15,000 miles on Verizon. They earn transferable Capital One miles.
Screenshot of the Capital One VentureOne Rewards for Good Credit and VentureOne Rewards Cards showing $0 annual fee and offer and spending terms. It shows how many transferable miles you can earn.

How to use Capital One Miles

My favorite way to use Capital One miles is on International flights and they’ve taken me far 😉

You can transfer to partners including Air Canada Aeroplan, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Flying Blue, Turkish (and more). They also transfer to hotels such as Accor, Wyndham and Choice Privileges.

Amex Blue Business Plus + Rakuten

Blue Business Plus earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on the first 50,000 dollars spent each year. When paired with Rakuten set to Membership Rewards, your earnings can grow quickly.

Why it works
• 2 points per dollar from the card
• Portal bonuses from Rakuten
• Membership Rewards transfer to many strong partners
• No annual fee

Quick example
If Rakuten offers 8 percent at Adidas and you spend 100 dollars, you’ll earn 800 points from Rakuten and 200 points from the card.

Also Important to Know: You are not required to have a formal business entity to apply. Sole Proprietors and freelancers can apply with their ssn and estimated income.

How to use American Express Membership Rewards Points

American Express has some fantastic partners including many of the same ones Capital One has. In addition, they are partners of Hilton, Marriott, and Delta.

Any Linked Card + Bilt Dining And Partners

If you want to earn Bilt Points without opening a new card, linking your existing cards to the Bilt app is a strong setup.

Why it works
• No new card needed
• Earn Bilt Points and your card’s normal rewards
• Helpful for Hyatt, United and Alaska Airlines

Quick example
A 40 dollar meal at a Bilt Dining partner earns 40 Bilt Points plus whatever points your linked card normally earns.

➡ ️ Pro Tip: Bilt categories (excluding rent) earn double points on the first of each month. Dining jumps from 3X to 6X, travel from 2X to 4X, and so on. If you have the flexibility, plan your spend accordingly.

How to use Bilt points

Bilt has one of the most impressive travel partner lists out there, including Hyatt, United, Alaska, Southwest, and more.

Optional: Bilt Mastercard + Bilt Ecosystem

The Bilt Mastercard adds stronger earning on rent and dining, still with no annual fee.

Why it works
• Great for renters
• Pairs well with Bilt Dining
• Strong travel partners

Quick example
A 30 dollar dining purchase earns 90 Bilt Points, or 180 points on the first of the month.

Bonus Stackers: Card-Linked Offers

Card-linked offers aren’t shopping portals, but you can stack them with portals to earn even more. These show up inside your card accounts, and you activate them before making a purchase.

Where to find them
Amex Offers: inside your Amex account under “Amex Offers and Benefits”
Chase Offers: inside each Chase card under “Chase Offers”
Other banks: many cards also have their own versions of card-linked offers that work the same way

How they work
Activate the offer, pay with that same card, and you’ll earn:
• Cash back or a statement credit
• Your normal card rewards
• Plus portal points if you clicked through a shopping portal first

Card-linked offers are one of the easiest ways to add a third earning layer to purchases you already make.

How To Stack These Strategies

This is where your rewards multiply. Stacking simply means combining different earning systems.

Double Stack: Portal + Normal Card Earnings

This is the everyday version. You click through a shopping portal, then pay with any rewards card.

Example
A 100 dollar purchase through Rakuten at 10 percent
• Rakuten: 1,000 Membership Rewards
• Blue Business Plus: 200 Membership Rewards
Total: 1,200 points

This is the simplest and most common way to earn transferable points on purchases you already need to make.

Triple Stack: Portal + Card-Linked Offer + Card Earnings

Triple stacking makes things more interesting. When you activate a card-linked offer and then click through a portal, you add a third earning system on the same purchase.

Example (general)
A 100 dollar purchase when:
• Rakuten gives 8 percent
• Your Chase card has a 10 percent Chase Offer at that retailer
• Your card earns its normal rewards

Portal rewards and card-linked offers are separate systems, so they stack nicely together.

Real Triple Stack Example: My Ariat Purchase

Purchase: $221.22
• Rakuten at 4X: 885 Membership Rewards
• Chase Offer at 15 percent: $33.18 back
• Chase card earning 1.5 points per dollar: 332 Ultimate Rewards

Total: 1,217 transferable points (Amex and Chase) plus $33.18 returned on my credit card statement.

All from a purchase I already needed to make. Triple stacking is where no-fee strategies really shine.

Decision Guide

  • If you want the simplest setup
    VentureOne plus Capital One Offers
  • If you want the highest everyday earn rate
Blue Business Plus plus Rakuten set to Membership Rewards
  • If you want Hyatt, United or Alaska
    Rakuten set to Bilt Points
  • If you’re a renter
Bilt Mastercard plus Bilt Dining plus Rakuten set to Bilt
  • If you don’t want to open a new card
Rakuten plus Bilt Dining with any linked card

If you’re still not sure this will work for you, these five common points and miles myths might help clear a few things up.
