🐠 Caribbean Reef Exhibit

We reached the Caribbean Reef toward the end of our visit, and it completely pulled me in. This 90,000-gallon circular tank glows with color with bright coral, tropical fish, and lighting that makes everything inside look electric.

It’s both calm and full of movement. This was one of the tanks that made me understand why Shedd Aquarium reviews are so consistently positive. Kids love the little submarine-style viewing bubbles where they can pop their heads in to see the reef up close. Our daughter loved it so much that we had to gently drag her away after multiple turns.

🐋 The Dolphin & Sea Lion Show

We started with the sea lion encounter, held on the stage platform in front of the main pool. The trainers introduced a rescued sea lion who had been injured and blinded in the wild, sharing how she learned to adapt using sound and touch. It was fascinating to see how she followed vocal cues and interacted with her trainer, showing both her personality and resilience.

Later, we saw the dolphin encounter, which highlighted natural behaviors like communication and teamwork. The dolphins leapt and spun through the air, each move paired with quick facts on how those same instincts help them in the ocean.

The Abbott Oceanarium theater itself is beautiful, with views of Lake Michigan and a bright, open design that feels connected to the water just outside. During the shows, a large projector lowers over that backdrop to display close-up footage and fun educational clips. It actually makes the experience even better, cutting glare from the lake and helping you see every detail clearly.

Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early for the best seats. The lower rows are the splash zone, while the upper levels are perfect for photos once the screen is lifted.

🐧 Penguins & Playtime

The penguin exhibit alone could justify the great Shedd Aquarium reviews—it’s nonstop fun for kids and adults. A few were zipping through the water like little torpedoes, darting past each other in a blur of bubbles. One especially determined penguin kept looping the same route again and again. We joked he must’ve been training for the Chicago Marathon too. 🐧💨

Meanwhile, another penguin had settled in, stretched out on the rocks next to a bright yellow rubber duck. Clearly, he had the right idea.

Whether you have kids or not, it’s one of those exhibits that pulls you in and keeps you there longer than you expect.

🌊 Stingray Touch Tank

Located in its own building, the Stingray Touch exhibit is one of the largest I’ve seen. Bring an extra shirt, as the rays love attention and occasionally splash back!

☕ Soundings Café

On the upper level, Soundings Café offers lighter fare like salads, sandwiches, snacks, and specialty drinks with a Lake Michigan backdrop.

🍴 Note: The menu has plenty of family favorites. It’s solid for a museum café, though seasoned travelers will find the options pretty standard compared to some larger coastal aquariums.

🥗 Farmer’s Fridge

Located near Polar Play Zone on the Underwater Level, this is a self-serve vending option. It’s great if you want something lighter or prefer grab-and-go.

🧃 Tip: Nearby booths overlook the dolphins, so you can snack with a view.

🌭 Deep Ocean Café (Seasonal)

Also near Polar Play Zone, Deep Ocean Café offers classic kid-friendly favorites like hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, pretzels, and Brown Cow Ice Cream.

Located on the Main Level near Amazon Rising, the Popcorn Kiosk serves freshly popped popcorn, chips, cold drinks, and ice cream from Chicago’s own Brown Cow Ice Cream.

🧺 Bringing Your Own Food

You can bring your own food to Shedd, but it must be eaten in designated areas, like Deep Ocean Café near Polar Play Zone. Outside food and drinks aren’t permitted in exhibit spaces.

There are two gift shops. The main one is near the exit and a smaller version by Soundings Café. Expect penguin plushies, lake-inspired apparel, and eco-friendly souvenirs.

🏨 Where We Stayed: The Wit & The Sable

We split our stay between two Chicago hotels — The Wit Chicago (for Marathon Weekend) and The Sable at Navy Pier (for our Shedd day).

The Wit, right in the Loop, put us close to the Chicago Marathon route and downtown restaurants. After the race, we moved to The Sable, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, for a quieter lakefront stay.

The Sable sits directly on Navy Pier, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and the Centennial Ferris Wheel. It’s about 2.5 miles from Shedd, walkable along the waterfront or an easy 10-minute rideshare. For our family, we grabbed ice cream from the Rainbow Cone truck outside Shedd, stopped for a play at Maggie Daley Park, then walked the rest of the way back to the hotel for dinner. It was a long but enjoyable walk, and the park breaks it up right in the middle. 

💙 Tip: Book a lakeview room if you can. The morning light over Lake Michigan is beautiful, and you can even spot Shedd across the water.

👟 Marathon Weekend & Exploring Chicago

We visited during the Chicago Marathon, which was equal parts exciting and chaotic. If you plan to visit that weekend, save Shedd Aquarium for Monday once roads reopen and crowds thin out.

We were there to support a dear family friend, and it turned into one of those unforgettable Chicago days. The city was buzzing, the weather was perfect, and the energy on the streets was contagious. 

After the race, we headed to Maggie Daley Park, a massive free playground that kids adore. It’s creative, bright, and full of climbing structures and slides. From there, you can walk across the BP Pedestrian Bridge to Millennium Park — it’s a fun, scenic connection between the two.

🛝 Tip: If you’re in Chicago with kids, set aside time for this park. It’s a great mid-day break before or after museum visits. Also make sure to grab some Lou Malnati’s pizza for an authentic Chicago deep dish (recommended by a local).
