Whether you're road-tripping with kids or catching up with friends, Virginia International Raceway is a down-to-earth spot where big memories meet small-town charm—no racing knowledge required.

If you’re looking for a Very Incredible Road Trip that combines a unique atmosphere, a chance to enjoy the outdoors with your family, and a budget-friendly adventure, Virginia International Raceway (VIR) should be at the top of your list. Even if you don’t know a thing about motorsports (like me), you’ll love the welcoming energy and the chance to experience the track from multiple fun, up-close spots.

Why We Love VIR

My husband and I love it so much, we almost rescheduled our wedding just to make one of our favorite events! It’s that memorable and special. We go with friends or family or both!

A More Personal Motorsports Experience

Unlike the massive crowds and high costs of big-name races, VIR offers a more laid-back, up-close experience that feels personal and unforgettable. You can walk right up to the paddocks, chat with drivers, and watch the action from multiple vantage points—all without taking out a second mortgage.

Perfect for Day Trips or Longer Stays

Easily accessible from several East Coast cities, VIR is an ideal spot for families, motorsport fans, or anyone just looking for a fun, affordable outing. It’s not just about the racing—it’s about making memories in a relaxed, social setting.

About VIR

Virginia International Raceway (VIR) first opened in 1957, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most scenic and challenging road courses in the country. After a pause in the 1970s, it was brought back to life in 2000—and not just revived, but reimagined as America’s first “Motorsport Resort.”

A Hidden Gem in the Countryside

On paper, VIR sounds like a high-end destination, with luxury villas, a trackside lodge, a full-service restaurant, and event spaces. But when you arrive, it doesn’t feel over-the-top or out of reach. Tucked into the quiet countryside of southern Virginia, VIR still has that hidden-gem energy. It’s welcoming, a little nostalgic, and full of charm.

A Track for Everyone

Today, VIR is a favorite among professional drivers and amateur racers alike. The track’s fast straights and technical turns are a draw, but what really makes VIR special is how accessible the experience feels. You’re not just watching from the stands—you’re walking through paddocks, chatting with drivers, and finding your own favorite spot to catch the action.

The Best of Both Worlds

Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying the weekend, VIR offers a rare combo: big excitement, small-town feel, and options that can work for a family-friendly, budget-conscious trip.

Getting to VIR: Easy Drives from All Directions

Virginia International Raceway is tucked into Alton, VA, right along the North Carolina border—making it an easy day trip from a variety of East Coast cities. It’s especially convenient from spots in Virginia and North Carolina, but cities in South Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Maryland are also within a 4–5 hour range.

Here are a few sample drive times:

  • Raleigh, NC – 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Durham, NC – 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Greensboro, NC – 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Richmond, VA – 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Charlottesville, VA – 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Norfolk, VA – 3.5 hours
  • Columbia, SC – 4 hours
  • Kingsport, TN – 4 to 4.5 hours
  • Martinsburg, WV – 4.5 to 5 hours
  • Hagerstown, MD – 5 hours

While there isn’t a nearby airport—it’s what makes it an even more fantastic road trip. From any direction, you’ll find plenty of routes to get there and make the most of your journey.

Tickets & Entry: What to Know

Getting tickets to a VIR event is easy, and the prices are refreshingly reasonable—especially if you book early!

🎟️ General Admission Tickets

Most events offer flexible options, from single-day passes to full weekend access, so you can choose what fits your plans. Ticket prices vary by event and the number of days you attend, but buying in advance typically saves you $10–$15.

Take our favorite event, the SVRA SpeedTour, which runs from September 18–21 in 2025. We usually head there for a Sunday day trip, and this year’s adult ticket is $40—but if we grab it before September 17, it’s only $30. Even better? Our 9-year-old gets in free.

If you’re planning to stay longer, multi-day passes are also available, with a 4-day pass maxing out at just $80. Not bad for an entire weekend of trackside fun!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Kids & Military Discounts

Kids 12 and under and active-duty military get free admission to most VIR events. Veterans also receive 50% off all events. (Note: There may be exceptions for MotoAmerica and HyperFest.)

🚪 Gate Entry

Just show your email confirmation—printed or digital—at the gate, and you’re in.

🅿️ Parking

General parking is free and there’s plenty of it, located close to the Pavilion.

Check the official VIR event schedule to see what’s happening during your visit and grab those tickets early to save!

Ways to Get Around VIR

One of the best things about Virginia International Raceway is how easy it is to explore the grounds. You’re not stuck in a single seat all day—this track invites you to move around and take in the action from different angles.

🚶‍♂️ Walking the Track

Paved paths and grassy routes make VIR surprisingly walkable. Just bring comfy shoes, sunscreen, and water—you’ll want to check out multiple viewing areas.

🏎️ Golf Cart Rentals

These are a fan favorite, especially for families, groups, or anyone wanting a break from walking. A four-person cart rental for one day recently cost us $150, which we split four ways. If you’re visiting on a busy weekend, it’s smart to reserve ahead of time—they go fast!

🚗 Drive Your Own Vehicle

At many events, you can drive to different spectator zones and park nearby. This is a great way to cool off with AC, bring along a stocked cooler, or set up shade for a midday break.

Top Spots Around the Track

🏟️ The Pavilion Area

This central spot has it all: access to the Pagoda Grill, the VIR Store, First Aid building, restrooms, and is stroller and golf cart friendly. The upper balcony of the Pagoda Grill overlooks NASCAR Bend and offers elevated views. On ground level, you’ll find fence-line spots for watching the action up close. It’s also near main spectator parking, where you’ll find extra food vendors during big events, and the Winners Circle.

🏁 The Roller Coaster

Our favorite! With twists, turns, and dramatic elevation changes, this section delivers non stop excitement. We’ve watched cars lose grip and spin out here—it’s always thrilling and never boring.

🌳 Back Straight (Near Oak Tree Turn)

This is where you’ll see cars hit top speed before diving into technical turns. It used to be home to VIR’s iconic 200-year-old oak tree (which fell in 2013), but it’s still one of the most impressive places to watch the race unfold.

👀 Pit Lane

Head up to the shared balcony above the North Paddock garages for an elevated view of Pit Lane and the start/finish line. It’s one of the best spots to catch up-close action and high-energy pit stops. 🎧 Hear me out: VIR gets loud. Pack earplugs or noise-canceling headphones—especially for kids and especially at Pit Lane.

🚦 The Grid

Get there early to see the cars and drivers line up before the race. It’s often a chance to snap photos, score autographs, and chat with the drivers. (Note: there are multiple grid’s, but our favorite flows out to the track right before Pit Lane).

Last year, my daughter met Kaylee Bryson, Jenn Krpata, and Amy Ruman right here. They were incredibly kind—posing for photos and handing out signed cards!

🍿 Snack Hack: Save money and enjoy your favorite foods by bringing your own food, drinks, and coolers. Alcohol is allowed (but no glass bottles).

Food Allergies? – No allergen menus are posted on-site, so I would recommend packing your own snacks if you have specific dietary needs. In our case, my daughter has a peanut allergy, but we were able to speak with the staff to ensure she could safely enjoy a burger and fries at Pagoda Grill.

🏁 Heads up: VIR also offers some premium experiences like track and car rentals, corporate retreats, and private driving programs—but those come with premium price tags. Since we’re all about keeping things practical (and wallet-friendly), this post focuses on activities that bring big fun without blowing a budget.

VIR has offered some wild experiences over the years—like when my husband drove an Ariel Atom here for his bachelor party. This one’s no longer offered, but it definitely lives rent-free in his memories!

Accommodations for VIR: Worth Knowing

If a day trip doesn’t quite fit your schedule and you’d rather extend your visit, Virginia International Raceway offers a few on-site lodging options, and there are hotels in nearby towns. Just keep in mind—VIR’s accommodations lean more toward the splurge side, and points-friendly hotel chains are located at least 15 miles away. Still, with a little planning, you can find something that works for your travel style and budget.

On-Site Lodging at VIR

If you want to stay where the action is, these are your options right at the track:

  • The Lodge at VIR – Hotel-style rooms with a porch that overlooks the “snake” portion of the track.
  • Pit Lane Suites – Located above the North Paddock garages with shared balconies overlooking the start/finish line and Pit Lane.
  • Villas at South Bend – Luxury condo-style units near the South Course—ideal for larger groups or longer stays. They overlook the uphill Esses.
  • Camping – Both tent and RV camping are available during race weekends. It’s the most budget-friendly on-site option which can also include power, water, and sewer hookups.

Nearby Points Hotels (Danville, VA – 15–20 miles away)

  • Hampton Inn Danville (Hilton – 16.5 mi) – Free breakfast, reliable rooms. ~45,000 Hilton points/night.

Whether you’re turning race day into a whole weekend or just need a place to recharge, there are options for every budget.

Money-Saving Tips for Your VIR Day Trip

  • Buy Tickets Early: Save money by purchasing tickets online in advance rather than at the gate. Check the VIR website because tickets are usually about $10 cheaper if bought far enough in advance.
  • Bring Your Own Food & Drinks: It’s the easiest way to cut down on costs and eat what you want.
  • Pack Essentials: Sunscreen, hearing protection, foldable chairs, hats, and water bottles go a long way.
  • Golf Cart Sharing: If you’re with a group, share a cart to split the cost.
  • Lodging Not Required: VIR is perfect for day trips, meaning you can avoid hotel (and resort) costs altogether.
  • Use your favorite gas app to save on the ride: apps like Upside, Earnify (Prime Members save on every gallon), or your individual favorite gas rewards programs.

Final Lap: Why VIR Is the Hidden Gem for Your Next Family Day Trip
