Getting to VIR: Easy Drives from All Directions
Virginia International Raceway is tucked into Alton, VA, right along the North Carolina border—making it an easy day trip from a variety of East Coast cities. It’s especially convenient from spots in Virginia and North Carolina, but cities in South Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Maryland are also within a 4–5 hour range.

Tickets & Entry: What to Know
Getting tickets to a VIR event is easy, and the prices are refreshingly reasonable—especially if you book early!
🎟️ General Admission Tickets
Most events offer flexible options, from single-day passes to full weekend access, so you can choose what fits your plans. Ticket prices vary by event and the number of days you attend, but buying in advance typically saves you $10–$15.
Take our favorite event, the SVRA SpeedTour, which runs from September 18–21 in 2025. We usually head there for a Sunday day trip, and this year’s adult ticket is $40—but if we grab it before September 17, it’s only $30. Even better? Our 9-year-old gets in free.
If you’re planning to stay longer, multi-day passes are also available, with a 4-day pass maxing out at just $80. Not bad for an entire weekend of trackside fun!

Kids 12 and under and active-duty military get free admission to most VIR events. Veterans also receive 50% off all events. (Note: There may be exceptions for MotoAmerica and HyperFest.)

🚶♂️ Walking the Track
Paved paths and grassy routes make VIR surprisingly walkable. Just bring comfy shoes, sunscreen, and water—you’ll want to check out multiple viewing areas.
🏎️ Golf Cart Rentals
These are a fan favorite, especially for families, groups, or anyone wanting a break from walking. A four-person cart rental for one day recently cost us $150, which we split four ways. If you’re visiting on a busy weekend, it’s smart to reserve ahead of time—they go fast!
🚗 Drive Your Own Vehicle
At many events, you can drive to different spectator zones and park nearby. This is a great way to cool off with AC, bring along a stocked cooler, or set up shade for a midday break.
Top Spots Around the Track
🏟️ The Pavilion Area
This central spot has it all: access to the Pagoda Grill, the VIR Store, First Aid building, restrooms, and is stroller and golf cart friendly. The upper balcony of the Pagoda Grill overlooks NASCAR Bend and offers elevated views. On ground level, you’ll find fence-line spots for watching the action up close. It’s also near main spectator parking, where you’ll find extra food vendors during big events, and the Winners Circle.
🏁 The Roller Coaster
Our favorite! With twists, turns, and dramatic elevation changes, this section delivers non stop excitement. We’ve watched cars lose grip and spin out here—it’s always thrilling and never boring.
🌳 Back Straight (Near Oak Tree Turn)
This is where you’ll see cars hit top speed before diving into technical turns. It used to be home to VIR’s iconic 200-year-old oak tree (which fell in 2013), but it’s still one of the most impressive places to watch the race unfold.
👀 Pit Lane
Head up to the shared balcony above the North Paddock garages for an elevated view of Pit Lane and the start/finish line. It’s one of the best spots to catch up-close action and high-energy pit stops. 🎧 Hear me out: VIR gets loud. Pack earplugs or noise-canceling headphones—especially for kids and especially at Pit Lane.
🚦 The Grid
Get there early to see the cars and drivers line up before the race. It’s often a chance to snap photos, score autographs, and chat with the drivers. (Note: there are multiple grid’s, but our favorite flows out to the track right before Pit Lane).

BYO Tips
🍿 Snack Hack: Save money and enjoy your favorite foods by bringing your own food, drinks, and coolers. Alcohol is allowed (but no glass bottles).
Food Allergies? – No allergen menus are posted on-site, so I would recommend packing your own snacks if you have specific dietary needs. In our case, my daughter has a peanut allergy, but we were able to speak with the staff to ensure she could safely enjoy a burger and fries at Pagoda Grill.
